FLYING SAUCERS – VISITORS FROM OUTER SPACE AND DESIGN MOTIF
Flying saucers are different from rockets. Deriving its mythos from various sightings in the late 1940s and early 50s the flying saucer’s discoid shape is iconic. In science fiction flying saucers transport extraterrestrials. They come from "OUT THERE" - beyond the known regions of space. They travel to Earth - sometimes for peaceful purposes, sometimes to colonize. They have speed and agility and they can hover. Their source of power is a mystery, like everything else about them. They are incredibly camera shy. While we think of rockets lifting off, we think of flying saucers landing. Flying saucers are the unknown. They are UFOs. They confront us with mystery. They confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life. Flying saucers test our ability to trust the Universe. During the 1950s and 60s they gracefully assumed the forms of vacuum cleaners, patio chairs and tea kettles.
